Egypt's Diplomatic Chief Calls On Hamas to Embrace Trump's Gaza Proposal and Disarm

Cairo and Doha are working on attempts to convince the Palestinian faction to accept the former US president's proposal to end the hostilities in Gaza, per the Egyptian foreign minister.

Mounting Diplomatic Pressure on the Group

Egypt's foreign minister stated that the time had come for the organization to lay down its weapons and not give Israeli forces any pretext to continue its military campaign in Gaza, where numerous civilians were fatally struck on Friday.

“Hamas should not be used as an excuse for the relentless killing of innocents, a situation that has worsened significantly since last year,” Abdelatty remarked.

The diplomat added that Cairo is “coordinating with our brothers in Qatar and with our colleagues in Turkey in order to convince Hamas to respond positively to this plan”.

Key Points of the US Initiative

The plan would necessitate Hamas to:

  • Lay down its arms and withdraw from political activities
  • Hand over the captives in custody from the 2023 attack, including two dozen are thought to survive

In return, Israeli authorities would:

  • Gradually withdraw its troops from Gaza
  • Be replaced by an multinational troops
  • Allow a temporary government headed by the former president

Most analysts concur that the plan would effectively terminate Hamas’s identity as an fighting force, while the Israeli side would give little ground.

Split Opinions within Hamas

The organization is at odds over the appropriate answer, with certain officials seeking additional time to evaluate the proposal.

The head of Hamas’s military wing has resisted the proposal, viewing it as a strategy to destroy Hamas regardless of they accept.

Those familiar with the matter report that the faction is expected to request changes regarding:

  • Disarmament terms
  • Continued presence of soldiers in the area
  • Guarantees that the Hamas leaders will not be targeted

Gaza Situation Intensifies

Israeli forces carried on its offensive in the northern area and bombardment across the territory on Friday, fatally striking 28 people.

Nearly a dozen of the victims were in Gaza City, while the remaining died in southern Gaza, including three in an Israeli drone strike in a southern area, which had been once declared a safe zone.

The Israeli military issued its ultimate directive for the city on earlier this week, with the defence minister stating that individuals left would be labeled as militants, a label that violates international law.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain stranded in the city, with numerous who lack the means for the trip to the south, which allegedly requires a significant sum.

“Countless individuals are forced to sleep outdoors while seeking refuge,” stated Sarah Davies.

United Nations agencies reported that there is no safe place for people fleeing the city, as areas designated as “safe zones” in the south are lethal.

A UNICEF spokesperson described the notion of a safe zone as “absurd”, noting that airstrikes are used with frightening frequency and schools used as refuges are often destroyed.

Medical Services under Severe Strain

Healthcare centers in southern Gaza are operating beyond capacity, with the Red Cross field hospital serving more than double its intended capacity.

Recently, al-Nasser hospital received the remains of 27 individuals of people fatally wounded by the troops.

The head of paediatrics described the conditions as “extremely difficult”.

Israel has been alleged to be striking doctors and clinics, with medical staff allegedly detained while on duty in the area.

Authorities has often stated that detained healthcare workers had links with Hamas, though offering no substantiation.

Fatalities from Israel’s war in Gaza has climbed to at least 62,622 civilians dead and nearly 170,000 hurt, as reported by the medical sources.
